Conference Venue:

Conference Overview

Our fourth annual conference is an excellent opportunity for local and global stakeholders (to include global thought leaders, industry leaders, entrepreneurs and policy makers) to meet and engage in ideas and solutions for the long term sustainable economic development and advancement of Myanmar.

The narrative that has emerged in recent years amongst both the local business community and foreign investors is that of a slow pace of reform and the lack of policy clarity. The lack of any guidance to embark on any new policies to stimulate economic growth or provide focus on any one industry which can backed by timeline of policy guidelines and directives is the message emanating from most Myanmar businesses.

Additionally the distressing events of Rakhine from last year have cast Myanmar under a global spotlight. In this time frame Myanmar has slipped from being one of the hottest frontier markets to an avoided market. Many global investors now avoid Myanmar and some have already left. Furthermore the recently imposed targeted US sanctions that were levied under the Global Magnitsky Act will make the commercial engagement argument a higher hurdle for Western stakeholders wanting to do business in Myanmar.

It is in this environment that the Myanmar Economic Forum finds itself engaging with various local and global stakeholders to seek a dialogue and a way forward for a country with a population of over 50 million people straddled geographically by the two economic giants of India and China and therefore appropriately the conference theme: Economic Engagement & the Challenge of Ideas.

Conference Objectives
  • The meaning of Economic Engagement and how does one engage with and within Myanmar
  • Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan (MSDP) and Macroeconomic Management
  • ASEAN Macro Economic Trends and Myanmar Impact Assessment
  • The economic cost of Rakhine to Myanmar’s GDP & FDI
  • Empowering Women Leadership in Economic Policy
  • Aspirations for a Banking Sector Strategic Plan
  • Incorporating global best practices from Extraction to Energy
  • The Challenge of Ideas and Execution into Policy

We believe that dialogue contributes positively in Economic Engagement and we hope that this Conference provides with opportunities in bridging the divide on complex problems in a longer-term economic context. We hope then ensuing recommendations from the discussions of the abovementioned Conference objectives results in the best positive outcomes for our various local and global stakeholders.
